I ended up allowing the melodic material to govern the form of the piece, which is a rather nonstandard AABBC, with a 14 bar A section, 8 bar B and 12 bar C.
The solo section is designed to reflect the symmetry of the dual-lobed image by allowing the solos to overlap in the middle.
